Cincinnati Bengals fans could be forgiven for having a rough Thursday. Early in the day, their star quarterback Joe Burrow went down during a training camp drill and had to be carted off the field — with many fearing the worst, another serious injury that would have ruled out the franchise player for the foreseeable future.
Fortunately, Burrow has “only” suffered a strain in his right calf — an injury that will cost him some time, but not nearly as much as first feared.
How much time will Burrow miss?
While Burrow has avoided the worst-case scenario, the Bengals are likely to proceed with caution so their star quarterback is in peak condition for the start of the regular season.
Burrow could now miss the Bengals‘ entire slate of preseason games, which begins Aug. 11 against the Green Bay Packers.
Cincinnati‘s preseason also features an Aug. 18 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons and ends Aug. 26 against the Washington Commanders. Burrow will hope to be back in game shape by Sept. 10, when the Bengals’ regular season begins against the divison rival Cleveland Browns.
Burrow’s injury history
This is far from the first time Burrow has left fans sweating over his health. The former LSU star has become a consensus top quarterback in the NFL — which is more impressive considering the bumps and bruises he’s picked up along the way.
Burrow suffered a couple minor injuries in college but had his rookie season cut short after he suffered a devastating knee injury against Washington in November of 2020. In the playoffs the following year, Burrow twisted his knee against the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game, and he sustained a Grade 2 MCL sprain during the Super Bowl loss to the Los Angeles Rams.
