WATCH OUT FOR…

AUGUSTE RODIN (Meydan, 4.00)

This, arguably, is the most beautiful-looking animal in training and so far in his magnificent career he’s proven that handsome is as handsome does. It’s remarkable for Aidan O’Brien to keep a four-year-old with such an extraordinary c.v. in his yard rather than sending him to stud, but the decision could be vindicated over the coming months.

If Auguste Rodin runs as he did in the Breeders’ Cup Turf last November, his rivals in the Dubai Sheema Classic will not see which way he goes. Jockey Ryan Moore thinks the world of him and this can be a positive start to the season.

POET MASTER (Musselburgh, 2.25)

Three wins from four starts for this progressive gelding last summer and he’s trained by the right man to eke out more improvement. He might not be at the level of some of Karl Burke’s Group One performers but he can continue to pay his way and might just have too much class for his rivals.

JOCKEY TO FOLLOW

PAUL MULRENNAN is one of the most respected members of the weighing room, a fine ambassador and master of his craft. His appetite for hard work is voracious. He rode at Chelmsford yesterday but turns up today, 385 miles north, in Musselburgh for seven rides. JOHNNY RINGO (1.50) and NORTHERN EXPRESS (2.25), who he partners for long-time ally Michael Dodds, benefit from his expert guidance.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

RIDERS ONTHE STORM (Haydock, 3.15)

The title of one of the greatest songs by The Doors, the second single released from the album LA Woman and the last track by the band released in the lifetime of frontman Jim Morrison. Yet, remarkably, it never made No 1 anywhere and, despite being released twice in Britain, its best chart position was 33.

The equine Riders Onthe Storm used to be a class act, as shown when he won the Betfair Ascot Chase in February 2020 trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies. Now in the care of Richard Hobson, the 11-year-old’s best days may be behind him but he can go well in this veterans’ chase.

BIG DAY FOR…

THE race for the Jumps trainers’ championship could hardly be closer and we have reached the stage of the season where every penny counts. With Paul Nicholls not fielding any runners, DAN SKELTON sends two of his stable to Haydock, intent on extending his lead of £53,000. PLAYFUL SAINT (2.05), an honest handicap hurdler, has a good chance while Martha Brae (2.40) is an outsider but should not be discounted in an open race.

ROBIN GOODFELLOW – Best Bets

By Steve Ryder

In the opening Royal Mile Handicap (1.50) at Musselburgh, INDIVIDUALISM (NB) holds strong claims for giving the Johnston family a fifth win in the past six renewals of the race. The Too Darn Hot colt looks leniently treated on his handicap debut off a mark of 78 and he can make a winning reappearance.

Later at Haydock (3.15), CHAMPAGNE MYSTERY (NAP) should be able to gain his first victory since March 2022.

The handicapper has generously dropped him 1lb for his recent third place at Kempton, despite the form of that run being boosted by the runner-up Heltenham, who is now rated 12lb higher, winning twice since. The 10-year-old can make his first start in veterans’ company a winning one under Jonathan Burke.

THE WIZARD OF ODDS

By Chris Baker

2.05 HAYDOCK

This looks a fantastic opportunity for BRENTFORD HOPE (nap) to continue his progress over hurdles. A smart performer on the Flat, his victory two weeks ago was his fourthsince switching codes. 6-4

2.40 HAYDOCK

Testing conditions will suit the Venetia Williams-trained TANGANYIKA, who was an impressive winner at Newbury at the start of the month. He has since run well again to finish third at Uttoxeter. 10-1

3.35 MUSSELBURGH

Second in this race last year, METIER went on to win the Chester Cup before ending the season in Group One company. He warmed up for this with a recent run over hurdles in Sandown’s Imperial Cup. 7-1
