Steve Wilks, the former head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, has testified in a deposition and claimed that he was given a burner phone by the team.
This was during a time when general manager Steve Keim was suspended for drunk driving, and the Cardinals‘ hierarchy allegedly gave Wilks a burner phone so that he could remain in contact with his GM.
The coach, who was only in charge in Arizona for one year, the 2018 season, has said that he was given this mobile device by Mike Disner, the team’s vice-president of football administration.
Wilks also claimed that team owner Michael Bidwill was aware of what was going on.
“It was a directive from Keim as well as Bidwill, they both knew,” Wilks stated in a deposition, as reported by ESPN.
“With me being a first-year head coach, I felt uncomfortable.
“I worked this hard to get to this plateau and this opportunity and then I was presented with this situation, with being unethical.”
The investigation into the Arizona Cardinals
Wilks, who is know the defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals‘ divisional rivals the San Francisco 49ers, was testifying as part of a larger arbitration complaint against the Cards.
This complaint was filed by the team’s former vice-president of personnel, Terry McDonough, who complained of “gross misconduct” on the part of Bidwill.
As also reported by ESPN, the Arizona Cardinals‘ lawyers have complained to arbitrator Jeffrey Mishkin about Wilks‘ attorney not allowing cross-examination.
“As much as we would like to share the truth of what transpired, the confidentiality order in place prohibits us from doing so,” the Cardinals told ESPN.
