One prominent industry that has developed as a substantial global market since the mid-2000s is the smartphone industry. Some of the greatest inventors of the last few decades have driven immense innovations in this industry over the previous fifteen to twenty years.

Smartphones have benefited from significant growth in other sectors, including companies that specialize in electronic displays, widespread internet connectivity, and cheap supply chain costs.

As a result, many industries have seen huge profits following the developments of smartphones and the internet.

These industries worked together to accelerate the quality and advancement of smartphone technology. Given the unimaginable levels of growth, the sector has seen over the last decade, it is exciting and challenging to think about what is left for the smartphone industry to conquer.

Many sectors have grown from strength to strength following the significant advancements in the fields we mentioned above. In addition, some industries have developed booming sectors entirely because of the internet.

The History Of Mobile Phones

The race for supremacy in the mobile phone industry dates back to the 1980s. If you look at some of the devices people used back then, they were bigger than most home telephones. Some businesspeople would walk around with them in suitcases.

The idea of mobile phones generated a lot of hysteria in the days that predated the smartphone industry.

Some primitive mobile phones were large, expensive, and often had signal issues. In addition, many people didn’t own a mobile phone, so they would make phone calls from their homes, and the devices were relatively pointless.

As the race began to heat up in the 1990s, phones became sleeker, easier to use, and with better battery life. Some of the old telephones even have iconic games like Snake.

We’re showing our age there, but the Nokia 3310 was a game-changing mobile device released at the turn of the 21st Century and sold over 100 million devices.

However, around the same period, legendary creators like Steve Jobs at Apple were piecing together designs for a phone that could do much more.

The goal was to have a device with a color screen, a camera, and the internet all in one device. At the time, this was revolutionary. Today it is second nature.

The First iPhone

In January 2007, Apple unveiled the original iPhone. As far as smartphones go, this was the big bang. It was a phone with multiple apps, internet connectivity, and a camera. It’s hard to believe that this happened 16 years ago.

Millions of devices have been distributed since, and with each phone unique, there are ways of telling exactly how old your iPhone is.

Many of its competitors at the time had one or two of these things, but the iPhone had them all, and the screen had video playback and a much bigger screen size.

Apple has since released dozens of versions of iPhones and continued to innovate and stay at the front of this industry for over a decade.

The Future Of Smartphones

With billions of people all over the globe now owning a smartphone, the race is on for these companies to come up with more fresh and inventive ways to generate revenue.

Many analysts suspect the future of smartphones will involve holographic features, 3-dimensional designs, and chargers that you don’t need to plug into the wall.

Battery packs and portable chargers exist now, but the future phone may not require a chord to charge.

It will simply be a case of placing it down on a charging surface and allowing the phone to replenish itself. In addition, foldable smartphones may also become a key feature of future devices.

It’s hard to predict how they will look. You might be reading this article in 2033 and thinking these predictions are way off the mark. Smartphones may enter a cycle like fashion, where old phones come back into fashion.

Many governments are focusing on green technology and environmentally friendly devices. However, it is unlikely that these substantial tech companies will continue to churn out these phones at the rate they have been.

Mainly due to the production cost of materials and production.

In that case, many of the future phones might look very similar to phones of the past. It might even go back to a time when a mobile phone’s sole purpose was to call or text somebody! What a turnaround that would be!
